Discover Anduze pottery in the Gard region of France
Anduze pottery is a true family story, with know-how handed down from generation to generation. The business began in the early 1600s with the manufacture of utilitarian pottery such as jars and jugs, crockery and even tiles. Two centuries later, the Anduze vase began to be manufactured by the Boisset pottery, which has continued to perpetuate the tradition over the years. Today, Boisset pottery offers a wide range of traditional, classic, contemporary and more original pottery in the form of vats, bottles and more.
During your visit and free access to the workshops, admire the work of the potters, which begins in the quarry when the raw clay is removed. Various processes follow before the pottery is fired. After sizing to rough out the shape of the piece, it’s time for the lathe to refine it, varnishing to sublimate it and finally firing, the final stage, a true spectacle that reveals all its beauty.
Located 2 kilometers from the Castel Rose campsite, or 4 minutes by car or 6 minutes by bike, the Anduze pottery is one of the places not to be missed during a stay in the Gard region.

The Anduze vase
The Anduze vase appeared in France in the 17th century. It is said to have been brought back to Anduze by a potter who fell under the spell of a Medici vase at the Beaucaire fair. He then drew inspiration from this pottery, decorated with garlands, flowers and fruit, to create the Anduze vase, albeit with a more austere twist. This ornamental garden vase has a horticultural vocation, for growing citrus fruit. The reputation of Anduze vases took off at the end of the 18th century, and was confirmed in the 19th and 20th centuries. This vase is made for homeowners who wish to install it in their rich homes and beautiful gardens.
The traditional Anduze vase is characterized by its upside-down bell shape and rose garlands. They are connected by a cord and surround the pottery at mid-height. This pottery is made from clay and chamotte clay for greater resistance. Each vase is unique and bears its maker’s mark, represented by buttons and medallions.
The manufacture of Anduze vases requires specific know-how and numerous stages before they can be marketed (clay preparation, shaping, decoration, engobing, drying for several weeks, glazing and firing for an average of 48 hours).
